The Radha Govind Dev Temple in Vrindavan is one of the most historic and spiritually important Krishna temples in North India. It is closely connected with the early development of bhakti worship in Vrindavan.


Historical Background

Sri Sri Radha Govinda Temple in Vrindavan was established by Srila Rupa Goswami, a disciple of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who discovered the deity of Govindaji through a mystical encounter. Later, Raja Man Singh, a general under Emperor Akbar, constructed the magnificent seven-story temple around 1590 using red sandstone, with financial support from Akbar. This grand structure featured intricate carvings and a lotus-shaped ceiling made of heavy stone.

However, the temple's glory was diminished under the reign of Aurangzeb, the Mughal emperor known for his temple-destruction campaigns. Aurangzeb ordered the top four stories of the temple to be dismantled in 1670, disturbed by reports of a flame burning atop the temple, symbolizing its prominence. To protect the deity of Govindaji from Aurangzeb’s forces, it was moved to Jaipur, where it remains today.

While the original deity was relocated, a replica is still worshipped in Vrindavan, continuing the temple’s religious traditions despite the partial destruction caused by Aurangzeb’s invasion.
