In Sanatana Dharma, the cow is revered as Gau Mata, the universal mother. The Vedic scriptures describe cows as symbols of compassion, purity, and prosperity. Lord Sri Krishna Himself spent His childhood in Vrindavan as a cowherd boy (Gopala and Govinda), lovingly tending, protecting, and caring for the cows. Because the cows are so dear to Him, serving them is considered one of the highest forms of devotional service.
The Bhagavad-gita (18.44) identifies go-rakṣya (cow protection) as one of the essential duties of society:
"kṛṣi-go-rakṣya-vāṇijyaṁ vaiśya-karma svabhāva-jam"
Translation:
"Agriculture, cow protection, and trade are the natural duties of the vaiśya community."
