Madan Mohan Temple

Madan Mohan Temple

The Shri Radha Madan Mohan Temple in Vrindavan, built around 1580-1590, is one of the oldest and most revered temples in the town, situated on the 50-foot hillock, Dwadashaditya Tila, near the Yamuna River. Established by Ram Das Kapur under the guidance of Sanatana Goswami, it features a 60-foot-high, red sandstone Nagara-style structure. The original deity was moved to Rajasthan during Aurangzeb's rule for safety, with a replica now in the temple.

History:-

One of the oldest temples in Vrindavan: The Madan Mohan Temple dates back to around 1580 AD. It was established under the guidance of Saint Sanatana Goswami, a key figure in the Bhakti movement and disciple of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

  • Deity: The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna worshiped here as Madan Mohan (“the enchanter of Cupid”), along with Radha Rani and the beloved companion Lalita.

  • Sacred lineage: The original deity was discovered by Advaita Acharya and later installed by Sanatana Goswami, which makes this temple one of the earliest and most historically significant Krishna shrines in Vrindavan.

  • Cultural importance: The temple played a central role in spreading Krishna devotion in the Braj region and is deeply connected to the devotional traditions of the Gaudiya Vaishnava sect
